UNIT   I

LASERS

Introduction.  Principle of spontaneous emission and stimulated emission.  Population inversion, pumping.   Types of lasers - He-Ne, CO2, Nd YAG, Ruby lasers, Semiconductor laser. Applications - lasers in microelectronics, welding, heat treatment, cutting, holography.

UNIT  II

FIBER OPTICS AND APPLICATIONS

Principles.  Modes of propagation. - Classification based on materials, refractive index profile.  Splicing.  Losses in optical fiber.  Light sources for fiber optics -  LED and Laser diodes, Detectors.  Fiber optical communication links.  Fiber optic sensors - temperature, displacement, voltage and magnetic field measurement.

UNIT  III          

QUANTUM PHYSICS AND APPLICATIONS

Introduction to Quantum theory.  Dual nature of matter and radiation - de Broglie wave length. Uncertainty principle. Schrodinger`s equation.  Particle in a box.  Optical microscope - limitations of optical microscopy. Electron microscope - Scanning electron microscope, Transmission electron microscope and STEM.

UNIT  IV

ULTRASONICS

Introduction. Production - magnetostriction effect, magnetostriction generator, inverse piezoelectric effect, piezoelectric generator.  Detection of ultrasonic.  Properties.  Cavitation.  Industrial applications - drilling, welding, soldering and cleaning.  Non Destructive Testing - pulse echo system through transmission, resonance system.   Medical applications - cardiology, ultrasonic imaging.

UNIT  V      

VACUUM SCIENCE

Introduction. Importance of vacuum in industries.  Pumping speed and throughput.  Types of pumps - Working principle,construction, pressure range, limitations and pumping characteristics  of rotary pump, diffusion pump, turbo molecular pump - Measurement of vacuum using gauges - Penning, Pirani and Mc Leod gauges.
